continues on capitol hill this morning there is new hope for a deal to avoid that pass cal cliff. president obama will be meeting with congressional leaders later today. nbc's danielle leigh joins us live with the latest on capitol hill. danielle what is the datest in terms of what we can expect in the next coming days and the likelihood that they can reach a deal? >> reporter: mara, good morning. well, this meeting that is the last meeting at the white house is going to be integral. they need to see progress in this meeting if they're going to get a deal done before midnight on monday. as you know, the senate keim back early from the christmas holiday yesterday. but they didn't seem able to compromise. they continued the bickering. the house wasn't even here. they're not even in play yet. they're not back until sunday. we need to see congressional leaders see some kind of a plan that can be voted on before that december 31st deadline. lawmakers say it's getting decreasingly unlikely that's going to happen. a deal before the new year, although they seem it's possible, many think a deal will

got put through the metaphor cal meat grinder. it was horrible. falling from $17 to $4. as the company came into 2012 the ball was set very low. when the expectations are that low, even lousy results can take the stock hire as long as they aren't downright pitiful. last year sales nowhere near good. but in line with the street's expectations and not absolutely hard which was good enough to give the stock some lift at these levels. even though max has rallied this year, it climbed from $17. it still has a way to go before it's back to even. when you look at it in that context, this rally doesn't seem insane. office max has been trying to get its house in order. it announced it was reinstating its two cent per share quarterly dividend. not much. the stock yields about 1%. it also told us it was conducting a comprehensive capital allocation review. designed to simplify its balance sheet. a couple of important elements here. office max got caught up in the terrible lehman bankruptcy. they had bonds backed by lehman connected to timber assets. the courts resolved this in september. office m
will cepheus cal conservatives outraged and so this is kind of a high risk game, i believe, for boehner right now. >> is there any deal that wouldn't explode the tea party? >> well, yeah. >> what would be the deal? >> the deal that wouldn't explode it is if you cut a lot of spending and you don't all of a sudden raise taxes to a higher tax rate. i think they would be fine getting rid of some of the loopholes, but if this goes to where it's just higher tax rates on the rich and very little spending cuts, they little reform, i think there will be huge outrage. >> how about a sizable adjustment in entitlements, a big -- billions of dollars in cuts in regular spending, appropriations spending, and a reduction in the rich person's tax rate, a rise to 37% or 38%, would that sell with the right or not? >> i think there's a chance if they would see real reform, real cuts, more than what the president was saying, 2.5 times of cuts for every tax increase, but what they don't want are tax increases now and future cuts. that's not going to work. >> okay. thank you. just want to know what the rules were i
